Efforts Underway to Add "Gender Identity or Expression" to CT Non-Discrimination Law
Proposed legislation would add "gender identity or expression" to Connecticut's non-discrimination law, thereby prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression in education, employment, housing, public accommodations and lending. Should this bill pass, Connecticut will be joining 13 other states and Washington, D.C. in protecting its residents from this kind of discrimination.
The proposed bill, HB 5723, “An Act Concerning Discrimination” had a public hearing on Wednesday, March 19 at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. GLAD Attorney Jennifer Levi presented testimony at the hearing.

Legislature Tables Marriage Bill
May 11, 2007 -- Despite a strong vote in the Judiciary Committee, the Connecticut equal marriage bill will not have a full House vote this session. While encouraged by increasing support in the Legistlature and public opinion, sponsors of the bill felt there were not enough votes to ensure passage at this time. It is expected that the bill will be raised again next year.

Help Bring Equality to Connecticut by Sharing Your Story
January 24, 2007 -- Connecticut has had a chance to live with civil unions for over a year, and the experience has been an important step towards extending legal rights to same-sex couples. Now we hope legislators will be ready to finish the job in 2007 and pass marriage legislation so that committed, loving same-sex couples have full equality under the law. The co-chairs of the legislature's Judiciary Committee have said they will introduce a marriage bill later this month, and we are gearing up to expand our educational work, lobbying, and grassroots organizing efforts in preparation.
GLAD and Love Makes a Family are working to find and tell the stories of LGBT individuals, couples and families. We are asking you to help by sharing your story.
If you are willing to be interviewd so that we can share your story with the media, legislators, or the community at large (or if you have a friend who's willing), please complete our online story survey.

Victory in Connecticut: Court Bars Family Institute of Connecticut as Party to Marriage Case
August 7, 2006 -- Today, in a decision pertaining to GLAD's marriage equality lawsuit Kerrigan and Mock v. Department of Public Health, the Connecticut Supreme Court barred the anti-gay Family Institute of Connecticut from the case. The Family Institute sought intervener status in order to present their point of view that gay people cannot be good parents. The Court said, “We conclude that the institute has not identified an interest of ‘direct or immediate character’ that will cause it to gain or lose anything as a result of the judgment in this case.”
Calling the Court’s ruling barring the anti-gay group from the marriage equality lawsuit “the only just and logical conclusion,” GLAD heralded today's decision.

GLAD and Love Makes a Family Join Forces with Rev. John Selders to Build African-American Support for LGBT Rights
March 13, 2006 -- Reverend John Selders, pastor of the Amistad United Church of Christ in Hartford, has started work as a consultant for GLAD and Love Makes a Family, doing outreach to African-American faith communities in Connecticut. John has been a tireless activist on lgbt and HIV issues for many years, both in Connecticut and nationally, naming those issues as an essential part of a social justice agenda. With the National Black Justice Coalition, he helped organize the first Black Church Summit in Atlanta on Jan. 20-21 to talk about making their churches more welcoming to gays and lesbians, and he is also the vice-moderator of the UCC's Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Concerns. GLAD is excited to work with Reverend Selders, and we welcome his experience and enthusiasm for social justice as a valuable contribution to our ongoing efforts.
