Founded in 1978, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) is New Englands leading legal rights organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation, HIV status and gender identity and expression.
GLAD is at the cutting edge of the historic fight for full equality and justice. Through impact litigation, education and public policy work, GLADs precedent-setting work has established anti-discrimination laws for transgender, gay, lesbian and bisexual people and protected the rights of those with HIV throughout New England.

Legal Assistant
Position Description
The Legal Assistant position provides key support for the GLAD legal department, which is comprised of eight lawyers and four legal assistants. The Legal Assistant performs legal and social science research, drafts research memoranda, and prepares court documents and correspondence. In addition, the Legal Assistant performs administrative tasks such as coordinating meetings and travel, filing and maintaining records, typing, proofreading, citation-checking, faxing, scanning, copying, preparing expense reports, and providing phone coverage. This position offers an excellent opportunity to learn about the litigation process and the legal issues affecting the LGBT community and people living with HIV.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's Degree; strong written and oral communication skills; proven research abilities; and proficiency in Microsoft Office. The ideal candidate will be proactive, organized, and attentive to details. In addition, the ideal candidate will be able to prioritize multiple activities in a fast-paced environment; read, analyze, interpret, and summarize legal and social science documents, including case law and statutes; and work independently as well as in a team setting. Familiarity with legal processes is preferred but not required.
Compensation
$29,000 plus excellent benefits: three weeks paid vacation, fully paid health and dental insurance, disability insurance.

Public Affairs Associate
Position Description
GLAD’s Public Affairs and Education Department aids GLAD’s legal work and the extension of LGBT legal rights through education, outreach, and media relations. The department works closely with both the Legal Department and the Development Department, supporting both litigation and fundraising efforts.
The department includes the Director of Public Affairs and Education; the Manager of Public Education; GLAD’s InfoLine Manager; the Web and Publications Manager; a Bilingual Outreach Educator; a part-time webmaster; and a department assistant who works in both Public Affairs and the Administration Department. As the central administrator for the department, the Public Affairs Associate will report to the director, but will regularly work with every member of the department.
Qualifications
- College degree and/or one to two years administrative experience.
- Excellent organizational abilities: setting priorities, meeting deadlines, managing work flow and paper flow, handling multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience with database management, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and FileMaker. Experience with design software (Quark/InDesign) and PhotoShop a plus but not required.
- Ability to take initiative and work on a team.
- Experience working with diverse communities.
- Writing ability and experience.
- Supervision experience a plus.Knowledge of issues affecting the LGBT and HIV-positive communities

Responsibilities
Media relations
- Manage media data base; track LGBT press coverage
- Screen incoming media calls
- Assist in the production of press materials
- Writing and distributing press releases
- Assist with logistics of press conference
Education & Outreach
- Organize and attend events (workshops/forums, discussion panels, etc.)
- Manage requests for GLAD speakers
- Assist with production of marketing materials
- Conduct research to support written materials
- Designing ads for various publications, program booklets, etc.
Electronic Communications
- Assist in preparation of electronic newsletter
- Assist in preparation of and writing for email communications
- Sending out all email blasts (via Constant Contact)
- Organize and maintain GLAD’s collection of electronic images
- Updating social networks pages
Supervision
- Recruit, train, and supervise department interns
- Supervise the department assistant
General
- Interact with vendors such as printers, designers, advertising outlets, mailhouses, photographers
- Copying, faxing, filing, and data entry
- Other duties as assigned.
